Music

Steve has been writing songs and performing since 2000. His earlier gigs included the Lancaster Maritime Festival and supporting (and learning from) the 2002 Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year, Vin Garbutt. In 2013, Steve developed his songwriting with folk/pop/poetry group DRAM in China. They performed at Shenzhen International Fringe Festival in 2015. A year in Prague gave Steve an opportunity to develop art-songs with a folk influence and to develop ideas around harmony by leading several singers' workshops. On returning to England in 2015, he established himself as a  performer of traditional Cumbria folk songs and wrote a number of songs within this tradition. These were performed solo, with folk band Herdus (2016-2019) and as part of the Cumbrian Songs & Stories show for theatres, hotels and tourist groups. His debut album 'Lake District Songs & Poems' earned a 4-star review from RnR Magazine. In 2020, Steve worked on a collection of songs with Danny Wood, which Steve had written between 2009 and 2015 (i.e.  before the Cumbrian folk period). The resulting album 'Natural State' is a diverse mix of styles, ranging from rock to shamanic chant, folk to power pop.

Steve has been commissioned to write songs for events, educational projects and theatre shows. These have included songs about: Maryport's maritime past, climber Bill Peascod, Gillerthwaite Field Studies Centre and an exhibition combining space science and stone circles. He is also happy to curate setlists of songs & poems for themed events. This have included whisky tasting nights, the Border Reivers and immigration.
